Many Central Texas owners run the business from a desk at home. That does not automatically create a deduction. The IRS cares whether a space is used regularly and exclusively for business, and whether your work qualifies under the rules for your situation.
This is general education, not a determination for your return. Bring photos, measurements, and how you actually use the space to your strategy call so we can decide what fits.
Exclusive use, in plain terms
A corner that is also the kids’ game table is harder to defend than a room or clearly defined area used only for work. Guest rooms, mixed living rooms, and “I answer email on the couch” rarely meet exclusive use.
Military spouses, contractors, and side hustles around Fort Cavazos often have real home offices. The story has to match the space.
Simplified vs regular method
The simplified method uses a fixed rate per square foot up to a cap. The regular method allocates actual home expenses by business percentage. Neither is “always better.” We compare once we see your square footage, utilities, and profit picture.
How bookkeeping helps
Clean books separate personal and business spending so home-office math is not invented in April. If your categories are a mess, fix books first, then decide on the office claim.
